A Moment of Suffering

27 Sep

suffering

Because we live in a world that seeks beauty without effort and success without hard work, we have come to misunderstand what it means to suffer.

Suffering is not something that happens to be people who are bad or deserve it. Suffering is a part of the process of living. Through our suffering we learn to accept that we are not in control…and we’re not supposed to be. That control we think we possess is an illusion and suffering will cause the mirage to fade.

In truth, suffering is what we were dong before things became uncomfortable. It didn’t feel like suffering because we have mastered the art of anesthetizing our feelings. And then one day the suffering that has been going unnoticed becomes so strong it cannot be ignored. At that moment we would like to believe that it is something that suddenly happened. Unfortunately, it had probably been happening for quite some time.

Remember the tone of the country after 9/11? People were afraid because it seemed to happen so suddenly. Then remember the shock and horror when it was discovered that the pilots were trained here in our country and had probably been plotting that event for years. It’s scary to think about; however, had we already been taking certain precautions, had we not become so narcissistic as to think we were above being struck down, it might never have happened that way. The good thing is that, despite the way it happened, what happened in the aftermath of suffering was beautiful, wanted, and needed. People helped one another. People were gentle and compassionate with one another. It was one of the most beautiful things I have seen. The country was bound together in love through our suffering. Suffering forces us to pull on the best of our humanity.

A friend of mine once prided himself on his education, his career, and the success of what he had accomplished. Then he was fired from his job. In the course of the next year he lost his home, his car, his fiance, and a good number of people he had considered friends. He took it in stride and continued to laugh and smile. One day I sat with him and I asked him if he was happy. He looked at me with a quiet sadness in his eyes and said, “I hated that job, I never could afford that house or car, and I never believed my girlfriend and I would be together forever. I wasn’t happy then. So, you can’t lose something you never had.”

Suffering humbles the spirit and forces us to look beyond all the superficial, temporary things that we use to make us “happy.” Suffering strips us down to our true selves and in our suffering we see our life for what it really is.

So the next time we find ourselves suffering, we shouldn’t waste time feeling sorry for ourselves and trying to blame someone or something for where we are. Instead we should see it for what it is: an opportunity to know the truth and respond to the truth with the best that we have.

Suffering, like so many things in life, works in contradiction to teach us life lessons. Only the heartbroken ever really understand love, only the poor ever appreciate wealth, only those that suffer ever truly understand life.

Violet Ambitions turn suffering into healing.

From Moment to Moment

Faith. I have often spoken against the notion of Faith as a religious concept. It is a disabling thing to pin such a powerful ideal up into a category. The connotation is there, of course, because of how the word is used; however, faith is more like courage. The only difference is that usually when we use the word courage we are speaking about a belief in ourselves to overcome opposition. Faith suggests that something through us, something that we are believing external from us is working for our benefit. The external force can be love or hope or an individual. Faith puts into play the notion that maybe the world does not hate us. Maybe everything external from our being is not our enemy. Faith is a powerful concept.

We have also come to think of Faith as something we obtain once and carry it forever. But I submit to you that faith is not a commodity to be bought and coveted. It is something that requires attention and conscious will to maintain. Faith never means that we won’t have doubts; it just means we will overcome them…from moment to moment.

Violet Ambitions shall endure all doubts.

Limitless

Our world has become full of rules and restrictions because the powers that be surmise that an individual is incapable of knowing what is best for themselves. We are so comforted by the thought of not being responsible for our own destinies that we settle into the box that has been created and ignore the fact that it is a prison.

Every time someone has said you can’t, you won’t, you shouldn’t, or you don’t know how, they are creating a prison in which you will be held captive and, therefore, never meet your destiny. Destiny is not in a box; it’s somewhere out there in the big scary world. Go find it.

When you know who you are and you know the strength you possess, you are free to follow your destiny. There is so much uncertainty and doubt about that fact. But don’t mistake your fear with practicality; it’s not. The truth is like all creatures held in captivity, we fear our freedom. We no longer recognize the vastness of hope. We fear the limitlessness of our potential. But, I submit to you that your fear cannot change your destiny. Nor is it big enough to block your path if you decide to chase your dreams. Accept your limitlessness.

If fear should follow you on that journey, let it. I guarantee it will tire you before you do and you will arrive at destiny with nothing but that which endures: the faith, hope, and love inside you.

Violet Ambitions are limitless.

All Things New

There are a dozen phrases and sayings that express the constant flux in our world. Things are always changing. Somehow we, as a people, have come to place emphasis on notions of stability, security, and consistency. In truth those things don’t actually exist. The world is unstable, uncertain, ever-changing, and completely inconsistent. It is, therefore, unnatural for any person to reflect those qualities. People who attempt to embody such qualities usually find themselves in a rigid, burdensome existence where they resent those who are able to embrace the magic of change.

We must allow the world and especially the people in it to be whatever they are and need to be at any given time. It is an offensive gesture to demand anything else. When we do we assume that we have the knowledge and understanding to know what they should be instead. Such a condescension assumes an authority of the natural forces of the world; that is egregious.

We must come to the world and the people in it in a spirit of empathy, curiosity, and love. We must first understand why a person is what they are (their origins), respect them for who and what they are, and accept them just as they are. This validation unlocks the door for love, intimacy, and influence. It is from this vantage point that any leverage for inspiring change (should change be needed) in an individual.

There is no right or wrong evolution, there is no good or bad growth. There is just change. Anyone who has ever endeavored to spend a lifetime with someone knows that people change. Sometimes we like it and sometimes we don’t. But it is a beautiful thing to commit to not abandoning someone as they evolve.

The opportunity to witness another person becoming is a gift that deserves reverence, not judgment and ruthless critique (theres plenty of that in the world to go around). It is why we are connected to each other and why we come into contact with each other. It is scary, nerve wrecking, and exciting to watch the world and people in it evolve. When we embrace change in people and the world, we realize that it is not a neurotic pathology that needs to be fixed. It is the world seeking to be better and evolve. It is a person seeking to actualize an heal their wounds. It is the universe seeking to reconcile it’s inhabitants unto itself.

Everything old becomes new again.

Violet Ambitions are nested in evolution and rebirth.

Perception In Flux

9 May

People are, by our very nature, covetous creatures. The problem with coveting is not the desire or the possession. there is nothing wrong with wanting things and not everything that we desire is bad or wrong. It is our reason for doing so that causes trouble.

It is good to seek knowledge and understanding. We all have questions; however, all too often we cling to the truths we find. We give our knowledge a weight it does not deserve. We hinge our self-esteem, our purpose, our very reason for being on what we know. And because we have placed so much of our identity and life on a few truths we have discovered, we cannot afford to have that changed or erased. We will refuse to consider that are other truths, other perspectives, other possibilities. The truth, then, becomes a prison in which we hold ourselves captive.

We must recognize that in the vastness of the universe, whatever fraction of knowledge we possess is both infantile and incomplete. If the truth is what we seek, it must begin with humility and an acceptance of our limitations. We must learn not to hold onto what we know today, realizing that what we know tomorrow may change everything. We must understand that throughout or lives everything we learn we will have to learn again.

Violet Ambitions are constantly in flux.

Embrace or Endure

3 May

Life is scary. The uncertainty. The never knowing. The endless, unanswered questions. It can be overwhelming. I can remember a particular time in my life when it seemed that everything was moving so fast I could hardly keep up. It seemed like one thing after another and although some of the changes were welcomed, I was a little intimidated to step into them fully. I sat with a friend and casually discussed some of my ideas for the year and things I wanted to accomplish. She was immediately enthused and began to grill me on my plans. Seeing my hesitance, she asked:

“Why don’t you just go ahead and do it?”

“Because I’m scared,” I answered honestly. She leaned forward and placed her hand on my knee,

“Then do it afraid.”

My fear was no longer an obstacle, it was just something I was feeling: nothing more, nothing less.

What is fear but the body’s response to a threatening situation? When we are really scared adrenaline courses through our body, our senses sharpen, our reflexes quicken, and anything going on in our body that does not help us avoid or overcome the threat is suppressed. In essence we are biologically designed to deal with challenges and fear is the switch that triggers our best response.

So, then, why do we seek to avoid fear? Why do we allow fear to grip us and make us impotent? When in fact fear is necessary to invoke certain responses in us. We must recognize fear for what it is: a catalyst. It’s not too be avoided. If it cannot be embraced then it must be endured, because sometimes we must do that thing that we fear we cannot do.

Fear will not hinder Violet Ambitions.

The Conviction of Faith

13 Jan

20130111-115934.jpg

Conviction is defined as being impressed with a sense of guilt. Doesn’t sound like a good state to be in, huh? However, I submit to you that feelings aren’t good or bad. You can have a good or bad feeling, but that expresses how the feeling makes you feel and not the feeling itself. Feelings just are.

Guilt is a feeling like remorse or regret. We attribute to having done something wrong. That’s actually a good feeling to have then, for how else will we know when we are in error?

People do a lot of things for a lot of reasons. Unless an individual makes up in their mind that what they are doing is wrong for them and desire to change that, nothing will ever change.

Faith requires conviction. In order to believe we have to be inclined to not disbelieve. Doubt is the enemy and when it gets the best of us we should feel guilty for having allowed it to do so. There should be a shameful feeling that keeps us running back to our Faith.

That feeling, that conviction, must come from inside. We must be our own conviction. We cannot rely on circumstance or any external force to change our lives for us. The conviction of our faith is more than enough.

Faith is about conviction; Faith is the foundation of all Violet Ambitions.

Hope Helps

20 Dec

Hope allows us to see the world not as some evil place to be feared, shunned, and fought. But to see it as a place that is both beautiful and shattered.

The shattered pieces cut and wound. They make the world dangerous, even wicked at times. But we hope.

We hope that the world changes. We hope that the world becomes the place we know it can be. We hope that it’s not broken beyond repair.

Hope forces us to see that the world was never meant to be shattered. The killing, the hate, the prejudice, the distrust, the fear are all shards of a broken beautiful creation. And hope helps us to see that and see that what the world needs is healing. That is why we facethe void. That won’t be accomplished by anger, or cynicism, or indifference. It will only be accomplished by love, faith, and hope.

Hope is the breath of all Violet Ambitions.

What We Know

1 Dec

20121130-070319.jpg

What we know is that as we stand face to face with the darkly glass what we see begins to melt away. We see the limitations of flesh and circumstance fading and the shadow of truth is illuminated. The truth is that we are infinitely more than we coul ever have imagined and that truth is not limited to us but extends to everyone.

What we know is that as we stand face to face with the others we see the truth about them and it brings us to the truth about ourselves. What we do to others, we do to ourselves. What we fear about others, we fear about ourselves. What believe about others, we believe about ourselves.

What we learn about ourselves is that we are more than what we see on the surface. The substance of our humanity is intangible and infinite. We are spiritual beings. Spirituality is about relationships and the connection that is shared by every living thing on this planet.

What we know is that there if there is any way that we are going to change the world into a place where dreams come true, we will have to recognize our individual place in the collective journey. We may think we walk alone but truthfully we are not the only ones taking the exodus from reality. We are not the only ones seeking our dreams; we are all awakening, we will all make the exodus from what we call reality. We may not always see the others. They may not always be exactly where we are on the path. But we are not alone. On the deepest level, we are all connected.

Violet Ambitions are shared collectively.

But Then Shall We Know

“Knowledge is power” by WAK

We must understand that however expansive a lifetime may seem, it is but a blip in the lifespan of the planet, a speck in the lifetime of the universe, a blink on the continuum of eternity.

What we endure in a few decades is brief. We must make the most of it in order for it to count. We love, we lose, strive, we succeed, we fail, we try, and we try again. What we know, we learn again, but that’s okay. In every now what we know and what we can be is limited.

But now is constantly moving towards then and eventually what is becomes what was and what will be overcomes the limitations of what is. A child can only comprehend within the confines of what they know at that stage of development. Then as they mature they develop a new understanding of the very same concepts the encountered years before. We know this and realize that it is part of the process of growing up. In comparison to the world, to the universe, are we not merely children struggling to grow up?

Then is a moment ahead of us where everything we have experienced, learned, suffered, survived, and endured will make sense. It will all seem worthwhile in the by and by. The purpose will be revealed, after while.

The purpose of evolution is perfection. We are getting better. Even if only by fractions. It doesn’t seem so now because our understanding is confined, but then shall we know.

Violet Ambitions is a journey away from now leading to then.
