A Moment of Suffering

27 Sep

Because we live in a world that seeks beauty without effort and success without hard work, we have come to misunderstand what it means to suffer.

Suffering is not something that happens to be people who are bad or deserve it. Suffering is a part of the process of living. Through our suffering we learn to accept that we are not in control…and we’re not supposed to be. That control we think we possess is an illusion and suffering will cause the mirage to fade.

In truth, suffering is what we were dong before things became uncomfortable. It didn’t feel like suffering because we have mastered the art of anesthetizing our feelings. And then one day the suffering that has been going unnoticed becomes so strong it cannot be ignored. At that moment we would like to believe that it is something that suddenly happened. Unfortunately, it had probably been happening for quite some time.

Remember the tone of the country after 9/11? People were afraid because it seemed to happen so suddenly. Then remember the shock and horror when it was discovered that the pilots were trained here in our country and had probably been plotting that event for years. It’s scary to think about; however, had we already been taking certain precautions, had we not become so narcissistic as to think we were above being struck down, it might never have happened that way. The good thing is that, despite the way it happened, what happened in the aftermath of suffering was beautiful, wanted, and needed. People helped one another. People were gentle and compassionate with one another. It was one of the most beautiful things I have seen. The country was bound together in love through our suffering. Suffering forces us to pull on the best of our humanity.

A friend of mine once prided himself on his education, his career, and the success of what he had accomplished. Then he was fired from his job. In the course of the next year he lost his home, his car, his fiance, and a good number of people he had considered friends. He took it in stride and continued to laugh and smile. One day I sat with him and I asked him if he was happy. He looked at me with a quiet sadness in his eyes and said, “I hated that job, I never could afford that house or car, and I never believed my girlfriend and I would be together forever. I wasn’t happy then. So, you can’t lose something you never had.”

Suffering humbles the spirit and forces us to look beyond all the superficial, temporary things that we use to make us “happy.” Suffering strips us down to our true selves and in our suffering we see our life for what it really is.

So the next time we find ourselves suffering, we shouldn’t waste time feeling sorry for ourselves and trying to blame someone or something for where we are. Instead we should see it for what it is: an opportunity to know the truth and respond to the truth with the best that we have.

Suffering, like so many things in life, works in contradiction to teach us life lessons. Only the heartbroken ever really understand love, only the poor ever appreciate wealth, only those that suffer ever truly understand life.

Violet Ambitions turn suffering into healing.

Ravaged by Truth

15 May

Philosophers have often commented about the inevitability of truth. It always comes to the light or it will set you free. What they have not always said is that it will turn your world inside out. We have been trained to fake it, to lie, to deceive, but if and when the truth comes for you (as they say it inevitably will), succumb to it. Let it ravage you.

However uncomfortable, embarrassing, or painful, let it take you. We should always give ourselves over to the truth when it comes. Most often it will be laced with a lie that will incite us to protest, but we shouldn’t protest. Anywhere there is truth, let it be. We should it have its way with us, because in that part that is truth we will be made free.

The freedom that comes with truth is the liberation from the lies. We will find a way to stand bare before the world and say “this is who I am. It is not all pretty or all perfect but I commit to it.” When we embrace the truth we disarm those who would oppose us, we liberate ourselves to focus on that which truly matters…love and truth.

Violet Ambitions seek truth.

The Opposite of Doubt

10 Feb

Doubt is common to human beings. We have become so educated and enlightened that we hardly know what it means to go beyond logic and understanding. We have forgotten that there was a time when we all knew so very little and all we had was our belief in a possibility.

Faith is about believing without need for logic and proof. When a person has faith in the something they believe from inside themselves and that is not easily shaken. If we cling to some logical thought in an attempt to believe, we have disregarded faith.

You cannot have faithin a person if your faith is dependent upon them never making a mistake or having no past history of error. That’s belief. Because you are saying that you believe that they will not do something because they never have. Faithsays: even when all evidence is contrary, I believe. That is why faith is the opposite of doubt.

This is not to say that faith does not waver or is never challenged. It is challenged often and it wavers frequently. But faith should be like a spring in the desert where you return again and again to avoid death. Faith should be like food for our souls, for when we stop believing, we stop living.

However often that we doubt we should seek it’s opposite and neutralize its negativity. For every thought of doubt we should have a challenging thought of positivity. This is the personal war that we all fight everyday. The difference is realizing that the battlefield is not in the people, situations, or things that oppose us. The battle is inside us against the doubt that seeks to steal life from us by taking our faith. Hold onto to your faith. When you feel that all hope is lost and you are about to give up, I dare you to try one more time. When you think that you are not seeing any results, I dare you to keep believing. Faith is not easy but neither is the reward tiny.

Violet Ambitions are doubtless.

The Miracle Position

1 Feb

Miracles do happen. They happen everyday. We live in a world of miracles: planes, spaceships, televisions, cell phones, electricity. All these things at some point were beyond belief. Now they are a part of our daily reality. That’s how miracles work. When a miracle happens it is so thoroughly consuming that it changes a world, indefinitely.

We live in a society that is about as pleasant as a jaded lover. Somewhere along the line we fell out of love with the world. We decided that it just didn’t live up to our expectations and that was its fault and not ours. So, now, we are skeptical. We are bitter. We are faithless. And miracles are made of faith.

It is surprising how many people would say that they do not believe in miracles when all they would need to do is look at the world around them and see it for what it is: a miracle. As people, we are some of the most ungrateful and irreverent creatures on the planet. And what’s worse is we have the audacity to be sarcastic and cynical. We are so out of touch with the truth that we cannot understand and see that there are, at least, as many possibilities in the world as there are limitations.
All it takes is an open face (I have issues with open minds lol). All we have to do is be willing to see and focus on that which is positive and hopeful, despite the opposition.

When we get in the miracle position we begin to see the world from an angle that makes anything possible. The glass becomes half full instead of half empty, love seems possible, hope abounds, and faith endures. What does it cost one to believe? he risk of disappointment? Well that, too, would be a matter of perspective. But we’ve been disappointed before and somehow survived. So why not take the chance? There’s infinitely more to be gained than there is to lose.

Violet Ambitions are everyday miracles.

No Shame in Faith

8 Jan

I had a conversation with a friend once about past relationships. He began to talk about a woman he once dated when he was 25. He talked about how he was young and inexperienced with love and though he loved her he cheated on her often. He admitted there a couple of occasions when someone she knew would approach her to tell her about what he was doing. He said she would look them in the face and tell them that she wouldn’t believe then unless she found out for herself. He said he couldn’t understand why that was her response and he felt guilty and thought he would clean his act up. She became ill and died before he ever got the chance. I looked at him and I could see the pain and shane in his eyes. All he could say was that he had never been the same since.

When I thought about his story, I thought she had to have some suspicion. If not before she had been approached at least afterward. But she refused to believe what she didn’t know for herself. Well, now, that’s called Faith.

Faith cannot be substantiated. It cannot be persuaded. It cannot doubt. Despite the fact that the accusations were true, that woman’s peace of mind cane from her faith in the man she loved. Had he been true to the love and faith that she had in him, he might not be so tortured now. If ever you are so fortunate as to find someone who is willing to believe in you beyond all doubts, you should cleave to that person. That person loves you.

It is not easy to believe in something or someone when everything seems to be contrary to that belief. But do it anyway, and do it without embarrassment, because it isn’t about whether it is true or not. Fauth is about what you believe to be true and your commitment to that belief. What you believe changes the world around you.

There are no Violet Ambitions without Faith.

All Faith

19 Dec

Faith is a word that is so often used with little consideration for what it stands for. Faith is a word and has a definition like any word does; however, faith is also a concept, an ideal, that symbolizes more than the definition suggests.

Faith is not reserved for the religious. One does not need a denomination or doctrine to have faith. Faith is a concept that, if anything, is spiritual and spirituality includes all people.

Faith is that impenetrable thing in the hollow of your spine that allows you to stand even when your back has been broken.

Faith is the foundation of all Violet Ambitions.

The Awakening

25 Nov

To stand face to face and witness the essence, the truth, of another human being will, inevitably bring us to the truth about ourselves. In that truth all the external and superficial will begin to dissolve and we will be left with the substance of what it means to be human: that which is common to man.

The spirit of humanity that resides in each of us, while expressed individually, is universal. And we learn that what we see in others is also within us, we do to others we do to ourselves. What we believe about ourselves we believe about others. We learn that the world is a group of individuals. Society is a collection of people. Life is a relative experience and the journey is only as lonely as we make it. We are only as separate as we choose to be.

That knowledge will comfort us on our exodus from the confines of reality: in our search for our dreams. The world is sleeping and dreaming- that we have in common- the only difference is some of us have awakened and are brave enough to seek the truth and believe that all things are possible. The rest of us are still waiting to be awakened, but they’re day will also come.

Violet Ambitions, once awakened, refuse to sleep.

What’s Behind Us Is Ahead

9 Nov

The present is that place where the past and future meet. To disregard one is to exist presently fractured from who we are.

The person we are right now is directly related to the experiences we’ve had and how they have affected us. However good or bad, our past is our past and we must own it. We cannot erase it and pretending it never happened will get us nowhere. We must be willing to embrace it as part of the journey, learn from it, and take it forward with us into the future.

The future of who we will be is mostly unknown to us and what little we do know of it is relational to our past. This is how we decide what choices we make and path we take into our future. We are motivated by the experiences we’ve already had and the things we’ve already learned.

The past is not always as pretty as we would like. Too many times we regret our past so much that we refuse to acknowledge it ever happens. And God forbid someone brings it up. We cry for acceptance of the things we’ve done and resent anyone who holds us responsible. The truth is we are the only ones who need to accept our past. Whether anyone else does or not is mostly irrelevant. Our past was for our learning and everyone might not like, forgive, or forget what it took for us to learn the lesson. That’s okay. That’s not their obligation; it’s ours. Our focus must be on how we feel about our past. If we don’t like that person we see when we look back; we should change it in the present and it will forever alter our future.

No one should be a slave to who they used to be. But in order to evolve into who we wish to be, we have to accept who we were. Evolution and growth are messy, sordid processes full of mistakes and mishaps. Once we’ve evolved we may look back in shame at that person that we used to be, but just remember that the only antidote for a shameful past is a changed present and a better future is the reward.

Violet Ambitions exist in all time.
